Europe’s Pike Fishing Season Is Almost Here

The Anticipation Builds: Europe’s Pike Fishing Season Is Almost Here

As winter slowly loosens its grip across Europe, anglers everywhere are preparing for one of the most exciting moments in the freshwater fishing calendar: the opening of the pike fishing season. Known for their explosive strikes, razor-sharp teeth, and aggressive hunting style, northern pike (Esox lucius) are among the most thrilling predators to target in European waters.

For many anglers, the weeks leading up to the opener are filled with tackle preparation, map studying, and endless speculation about where the first big fish of the season will come from.

When Does the Pike Season Start in Europe?

Pike fishing seasons vary by country and region, largely because regulations are designed to protect fish during their spawning period. In many parts of Europe, the season reopens in late April after a spring closure.

For example, in much of France the official predator fishing opener—including pike—is scheduled for Saturday, April 25, 2026, marking the end of the closed season that begins in late January. (Leurre de la pêche)

Other European countries follow similar patterns:

    • Netherlands: pike fishing is closed from 1 March until the last Saturday in May to protect spawning fish. (consult.environment-agency.gov.uk)

    • Poland: the pike season generally opens in late April, depending on water category. (Jackery EU)

    • Nordic countries: regulations vary, but spring and early summer are prime periods once spawning ends. (suomi-fishing.com)

These closures are essential for conservation, as pike spawn in early spring in shallow, vegetated areas where they are particularly vulnerable. (Rodmaps)

    Early-Season Pike Behavior

When the season opens, pike are often still in or just leaving their spawning zones. During this period they tend to hold in:

    • shallow bays

    • flooded vegetation

    • reed edges and grassy flats

Once spawning ends and water temperatures begin to rise, pike enter an intense feeding phase. This post-spawn period is one of the best opportunities of the year to catch large fish because they aggressively hunt to regain energy.

In northern regions such as Finland and Sweden, this feeding window typically peaks from mid-May through early June, when pike are particularly active. (suomi-fishing.com)

    Best Early-Season Techniques

Opening season can be unpredictable, but a few proven tactics consistently produce results.

    1. Slow-moving lures
Cold water means slower metabolism. Suspending jerkbaits, soft plastics, and glide baits worked slowly can trigger strikes from sluggish fish.

    2. Target shallow structure
Look for reed beds, submerged grass, and warming flats where baitfish gather.

    3. Downsizing presentations
Early in the season, smaller lures often outperform large ones.

    4. Weather awareness
A few warm, sunny days can quickly raise water temperatures in shallow bays—often concentrating pike in those areas.

    Responsible Fishing at the Opener

Because many fish may still be close to spawning areas, responsible angling practices are especially important early in the season. Many fisheries encourage or require catch-and-release, particularly for large breeding fish.

Anglers should also check local regulations carefully. Rules may include:

    • daylight-only fishing hours

    • size limits or catch quotas

    • designated “no-kill” zones

    • local seasonal variations in opening dates (Leurre de la pêche)

    The Season Ahead

Once the season opens, opportunities only improve. Spring gives way to explosive summer topwater bites, autumn offers some of the year’s biggest fish, and tournaments across Europe celebrate the species—such as large predator competitions held in Baltic waters each year. (GARMIN PREDATOR CUP -)

For anglers across the continent, the start of pike season is more than just a regulatory date—it’s a signal that winter is over and another year of unforgettable fishing adventures is about to begin.

So check your leaders, sharpen those hooks, and start planning your first trip of the season. Somewhere beneath the reeds, a trophy pike is waiting.

Really excited for the new pike season! After the long winter, this is exactly what anglers have been waiting for. The tips about targeting shallow areas and using slower lures are super helpful can’t wait to get back on the water and hopefully land a big one early in the season. Good luck everyone and fish responsibly!
